Conduct Unbecoming: The Story of the Murder of Canadian Prisoners of War in Normandy
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Toronto Pr (Trd) (February, 1998)
Author: Howard Margolian
Average review score:

An excellent and well-researched book
Howard Margolian's book is a well-written and -researched book that explores the conflict between the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and the 12th SS Panzer Division, particularly the issue of murdering Prisoners of War by the Germans. By documenting several previously uncredited murders, Margolian has revealed the full extent of the SS atrocities. Each incident is treated with respect and by using forensic evidence he has made a plausible reconstruction of the events. A credit to scholarship.

Confederate Vixen (Heartfire Romance)
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (October, 1993)
Author: Teresa Howard
Average review score:

Confederate Vixen
This is a great book and I now have a new author to look forwatd to reading. Kinsey Blake is a Rebel gal, loyal to the Confederate cause. So much so she disguised herself as a guy in order to fight. Her new husband is killed in front of her and she swears revenge against the Yankees. She returns home to Virginia and President Jefferson Davis appoints her to a secret mission as a Confederate spy, known as the Vixen in Gray. She heads to Washington D.C., where her aunt has a boarding house. There she is shocked to find the gorgeous Yank, who killed her husband or was it his brother?

Here starts the beginnings of a wonderful romance, between Kinsey and Chap. Through many ups and downs, the two find love. The characters are well-developed and the plot keeps you turning the pages. There also a couple secondary romances and as well as the use of the Abraham Lincoln family as a part of the story. I have found a new author whose books I will devour. I don't see any books from her after 1994 and only four by her before then. Oh no, does that mean she has stopped writing, if her other 3 books are as delightful as this one, I surely don't understand it.

Average review score:

If I know now what I should have known years ago...
This is an excellent resource on successfully getting through college. I wish Mr. Warshaw had written it earlier, or that I had at least found it sooner. This book was an inspiration to go back to college and just do it. The tecniques described are easy to follow, sensible and useful. They stick with you and assist in other aspects of everyday life. I highly recommend this book for 11th and 12th grade students, new college students, and all returning students.

Author: David A. Howard
Average review score:

Excellent Book!
David A. Howard has written an excellent book for both academic purposes and casual reading. This insightful and provocative look at the life and times of Cabeza De Vaca should supplement any course that strives to thoroughly explore Latin American history. I highly recommend this text for not only people who are searching for historical truths but also for those interested in reading a genuinely captivating chronicle.

The Constitution Besieged: The Rise and Demise of Lochner Era Police Powers Jurisprudence
Published in Hardcover by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (January, 1993)
Author: Howard Gillman
Average review score:

The best revisionist work on the Lochner Court I've seen
Most students who first take a constitutional law course learn the Lochner era in the same fashion: that the justices of the Supreme Court forced their view of proper market relations on the rest of the country (the Holmesian view). This view is perpetuated by the selective choice of cases that most students are exposed to, usually only Lochner, Adair, and Hammer v. Dagenhart. But this view begins to break down as one studies further cases and it becomes clear that for the most part the Court struck down a fairly limited number of laws in this area and upheld the vast majority of state regulations. The subject has needed a coherent, systematic revision for some time and Howard Gillman delivers such a study with clarity and surprising brevity.

Gillman begins with a clear thesis: that the Lochner era jurisprudence was grounded in a constitutional tradition rooted in the founders' desire to form a faction free republic. This tradition held that the states' police powers could only be used in a neutral manner to benefit the general welfare; that the state couldn't use its regulatory power to benefit one faction only. This tradition was based on the assumption that the American economy could provide for everyone in a manner that would protect against social dependency as experienced in Europe. Gillman traces this legal tradition from the founders through the nineteenth century and up to the final demise in 1937. Gillman places the Lochner decision in the context of this tradition and explains that it wasn't really motivated by laissez-faire market views but instead was a good faith attempt to preserve a tradition that was increasingly undermined by the changing industrial relations of America. This work is well worth the read for anyone interested in American constitutional history.

One final word of praise. Gillman is not interested in justifying and resurrecting Lochner in the modern day, as some economic rights activists have called for. Instead he is focused on defusing the claim that the Lochner era was one of rampant judicial activism. Gillman succeeds admirably in his task.

Contemporary Issues in Leadership
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (September, 1993)
Authors: William E. Rosenbach, Robert L. Taylor, and Howard Prince
Average review score:

A Good Intermediate Text
This book is best for those who have already read a couple of books on leadership, particularly those by Warren Bennis and James MacGregor Burns since these two figure's ideas are present in many of this book's pages. That is not to say there are no new paths taken. Sashkin and Rosenbach's "A New Vision of Leadership" is eye-opening in its redefinition of transformational leadership. This essay also does well in illustrating the differences between leadership and management, a division I was not sure existed until I picked up this book. Payne, Fuqua, and Canegami's "Women as Leaders" was equally fresh and eye-opening. This is a good book to read to start developing more complex ways of looking at leadership.

Conversational Greek in 7 Days with Book
Published in Audio Cassette by NTC/Contemporary Publishing Company (June, 1991)
Authors: Series Conversational, Hara G. Middle, and Howard Middle
Average review score:

Grab it and go!
This is a simple, streamlined course with the basics--but arranged in such a way that it's easy to glean more than just phrases. The dialogues are realistic and helpful. Following each you are given an opportunity to respond to variations on the scene, composing your own phrases. It can be somewhat confusing if you are expecting the book to follow the audio verbatim--this, too, appears to be purposefully designed to force you to understand what you're hearing and do some of your own thinking.

The Cool of the Wild: An Extremist's Guide to Adventure Sports
Published in Paperback by NTC/Contemporary Publishing (June, 1994)
Author: Howard Tomb
Average review score:

Extremely witty and subtle; he's obviously been there.
As a long-time mountaineer, rock climber, ice climber, skydiver, etc., I was profoundly impessed with the depth and accuracy of Tomb's knowledge. His understated and bone-dry wit has been a hit with every serious outdoorsperson I know, while no one else can figure out what we find so funny. If you can appreciate receiving a deduction of style points for a skull jam, this book is for you!

Cosmic Command
Published in Paperback by New Life Foundation (August, 1979)
Author: Vernon Howard
Average review score:

Sanity in short sentences
Cosmic Command is a strange title, but it captures what Vernon Howard taught, ie., that above our usual, learned thinking is a part of us that "knows," that is not caught in the mire of tension, appearances or egotism. I have read many of Howard's books, and "The Power of Your Supermind" is a good place to begin, as it is clearly written and eases you into his philosophy. Cosmic Command is a collection of very short epigrams that crystallize the essence of his thinking. "Pretense is tense." "Do not give your life away to the neurosis of other people, for it is not required of you." "Correct the mind and we lose the burden of correcting everything else." I highly recommend Cosmic Command, but keep reading if you don't get it at first. At some point you will, and the result will be like the lights coming on at the annual haunted house...the hoax of fear and illusion is exposed.
